Emory Physician Assistant Students International Experience in Slovenia
The site of one of Emory’s international clinical
rotations is in Slovenia, a country in the southeastern corner of Europe.
Although the country boosts a modest population of two million people in an area
slightly smaller than New Jersey it is rich in history. Once a part of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire, it became one of the states forming the country of
Yugoslavia in 1929. In 1991 Slovenia declared independence and in 2004 it joined
the European Union.
The clinical rotation is based at Celje General and
Teaching Hospital in the city of Celje. During the rotation I was able to spend
time in different departments of the hospital; cardiology, intensive care, the
emergency department as well as in the pre-hospital setting on their physician
staffed ambulances. Besides studying clinical medicine I was also able to
discuss different aspects of healthcare with many of the hospital doctors, such
as the role of the physician assistant profession, which is largely unheard of
in Slovenia, and the differences between Slovenia’s mostly socialized health
care system and healthcare in the United States.
Of course, besides studying medicine there was time
to spend with the local people, who were exceptionally hospitable and to explore
Slovenia’s beautiful countryside in the Julian Alps and along the coast of the
Adriatic Sea.
