
Housing in Atlanta
General Comments from Students and Graduates:
You
must think carefully about location in considering your choice of residences.
One of the critical factors in the PA program is managing your time effectively.
The objective is to minimize commute time to campus. The more time you
spend in your car commuting, the less time you are effectively studying.
The
public transportation system (MARTA) in metro Atlanta is excellent.
Unfortunately, Emory is not on the train routes. MARTA can still get you to
Emory from most surrounding areas. Keep in mind:

The commute
requires several transfers (train to bus or combo) and a lot of dead time but it
can be done. Some students can study on the MARTA, but not all.
Considerations if you drive to campus:
¨
Graduate
housing is a walk through Lullwater Park or shuttle bus ride away.
¨
At the outer
ranges are residences/apartments outside what is known as the "perimeter" or the
I-285 loop which runs completely around Atlanta. Living around the perimeter is
manageable; if you live right at the perimeter expect a 30 minute drive during
peak hours, if you live further it may be 45 minutes to an hour (so most commute
during non rush hour traffic).

Lower housing
costs makes up what you give up in commute time; so, there are trade-offs.
¨
Commutes can
be well used listening to taped lectures if this type of review is helpful for
you.
¨
Of classmates
who live outside of Atlanta, most get to school by 7:30. By beating the commute
traffic you can turn a 1 hr peak traffic trip into a 30-45 min trip. Good study
time before class!
¨
If you are
moving to Atlanta try and stay with in a five-ten mile radius of the school, or
at least right around the I-285 loop.

located on Clairmont Avenue and conveniently across from Emory Graduate Student
Housing. Classmates can drive, walk to school or choose to ride the shuttle
(for a fee). Upscale apartments in gated community with lots of amenities
including decks, workout facility. Small pets.

Highland Lake Circle. These apartments are owned and operated by the same
people who run Carlyle Lake. They also have the same floor plans but are a
little more expensive. They are located right across the street from the VA

There
are several Post properties in Atlanta, all of them up-scale. The rents
however are competitive. Post has an outstanding reputation for service to
tenants - if something is not working in your apartment it gets fixed
immediately or you get a discount on your rent. Each complex also has
security that prevents access by other than authorized tenants and their
guests; you can add additional apartment security at most locations. This may
be an important factor for women living alone.
President Park Apartments,
1231 Clairmont Rd. About 10 minutes from campus (only about 1.5 miles). Great
location, and very affordable (behind Publix on Clairmont).

lots of trees, central yards are large and good sidewalks, apartments are

pool, tennis courts, workout facility, car wash, hook-ups, laundry, a/c,

neighborhood. Minimal yard space but well kept and a great deal!
