Housing and Transportation in Atlanta

You must think carefully about location in considering your choice of residences.  One of the critical factors in the PA program is managing your time effectively.  The objective is to minimize commute time to campus.  The more time you spend in your car commuting, the less time you are effectively studying.

The public transportation system  (MARTA) in metro Atlanta is excellent.  Unfortunately, Emory is not on the train routes, only buses.  MARTA can still get you to Emory from most surrounding areas.  Keep in mind:   The commute requires several transfers (train to bus or combo) and a lot of dead time but it can be done.  Some students can study on the MARTA, but not all.

Emory operates a free shuttle bus service called Cliff  to many nearby locations

Considerations if you drive to campus:

¨      Graduate housing is a walk through Lullwater Park or shuttle bus ride away.

¨       At the outer ranges are residences/apartments outside what is known as the "perimeter" or the I-285 loop which runs completely around Atlanta.  Living around the perimeter is manageable; if you live right at the perimeter expect a 30 minute drive during peak hours, if you live further it may be 45 minutes to an hour (so most commute during non rush hour traffic).

¨      Lower housing costs makes up what you give up in commute time; so, there are trade-offs.

¨      Commutes can be well used listening to taped lectures if this type of review is helpful for you.

¨      Of classmates who live outside of Atlanta, most get to school by 7:30.  By beating the commute traffic you can turn a 1 hr peak traffic trip into a 30-45 min trip. Good study time before class!

¨      If you are moving to Atlanta try and stay with in a five-ten mile radius of the school, or at least right around the I-285 loop.

 Arbor Hills, 2696 N. Druid Hills Rd.; located about 2 miles from campus.  Pool, car wash, tennis courts (free lessons included), laundry, and exercise facility with racquetball courts.  Complex is very nicely landscaped.  Fairly laid back managers. 404-633-8258.

Calibre Woods, 2075 LaVista Rd., located near Toco Hills shopping center.  One mile from campus.  Pool, tennis courts, laundry facilities, exercise equipment. 404-634-4259.

 Cameron Pointe , 1901 Briarcliff Rd., near Clifton Rd. features fireplaces and alarm systems in all apartments, sunrooms, private patios, carpeting, w/d connections, pool, and tennis courts. A bit pricey, but nice and VERY close to campus).  404-320-1953

 Carlyle Lake & Highland Lake located on Clairmont Avenue and conveniently across from Emory Graduate Student Housing.  Classmates can drive, walk to school or choose to ride the shuttle (for a fee).  Upscale apartments in gated community with lots of amenities including decks, workout facility. Small pets.

10 Highland Lake Circle.  These apartments are owned and operated by the same people who run Carlyle Lake.  They also have the same floor plans but are a little more expensive.  They are located right across the street from the VA (down the street from Carlyle Lake). 404-633-6118

Great location directly across from Emory Campus and VA Hospital!  Recently renovated one and two bedrooms with washer and dryer included.  Beautiful amenities such as resort style pool and cardio theater.  Pets welcome! 

Collier Road Apt., 1000 Collier Rd. 1-2 bedroom available.  20 minutes to campus.  Residential area.  Hardwood floors and high ceilings.  Pets allowed.  404-355-4750

 Emory Valley –1261 Glenwood Ave These are right across the street from the law school.  Older complex that seems like a motel converted to apartments.   404-622-1448.

 Kenco –Briarcliff, 2194 Briarcliff Rd., near N. Druid Hills.  1 & 2 bd room apts, no undergrads, no pets, was/dry/pool/ carpeting and hardwood floors.  Really quiet and good deal.  A smaller complex, owner runs another complex across the street and one on Lavista.  404-633-7939

 Longwood Apartments – 3131 North Druid Hills Road.  Located on the corner of N. Druid Hills and Clairmont, about a 5-minute drive from school.  Washers and dryers are included and pets are allowed. 404-320-9140

 North Cliff Gables, 1831 Briarcliff Cir.  Large apts. 12 minute commute.  Quiet complex, nice pool, fireplace, screened in porch.  2-3 bedroom available.  Good deals 404-634-6415

Post Walk, 3421 N. Druid Hills Rd., just 3 miles from Emory at North Druid Hills & Clairmont.  It offers w/d hook-ups, fireplace, deck/porch, security entrance gate, tennis court, pool, and workout facility.  No washer/dryer. Excellent management.  404-633-0373.

There are several Post properties in Atlanta, all of them up-scale.  The rents however are competitive.  Post has an outstanding reputation for service to tenants - if something is not working in your apartment it gets fixed immediately or you get a discount on your rent.  Each complex also has security that prevents access by other than authorized tenants and their guests; you can add additional apartment security at most locations.  This may be an important factor for women living alone.

President Park Apartments, 1231 Clairmont Rd.  About 10 minutes from campus (only about 1.5 miles).  Great location, and very affordable (behind Publix on Clairmont).    404-325-4193

Rock Spring Estates, (Gables property) outskirt of VA Highlands.  No gates but security alarm.  2 bedroom/2 bath  404-872-1111

Sloan Square, 1555 Lavista Rd. near Briarcliff. W/d in each unit, 24 hr-monitored alarm, swimming pool, exercise room, microwave, fireplace, and sunroom available.   404-320-0439.

Valley Brook Crossing Apartments, 777 Valley Brook Road (which turns into N Druid Hills).  4.5 miles from campus, 1.2 miles. from N. Dekalb Mall.  Offers screened - in carpeted porches, w/d connections, central laundry facility, small pets, tennis court, pool, clubhouse, individual storage room, 24 hour maintenance. . Pretty grounds with lots of trees, central yards are large and good sidewalks, apartments are roomy.  404-299-9305 

Valley Place Apartments-3324 Valley Brook Road about 4 mi. from campus, 1 mi. from N. Dekalb Mall.  Offers pool, tennis courts, workout facility, car wash, hook-ups, laundry, a/c, balconies,  small pets ok with deposit .   No security gate but in a decent neighborhood.  Minimal yard space but well kept and a great deal!  404-296-0548

Willow Ridge, 3548 Rockbridge Rd., Avondale Estates. On corner of Northern Ave. & Rockbridge about 5 miles from campus features dishwasher, A/C, pool, tennis, fitness trail, and security systems in each apt.   404-299-9320.

Windsor at Briarhill, 1470 Sheridan Rd., near Briarcliff & N. Druid Hills.  About 3 miles from campus.  Very nice, somewhat smaller setting.  Safe; alarms, gated. Vaulted ceilings, fireplaces, washer & dryer inside apartment.  Nice pool, spa/fitness center.  Small pets O.K.  404-634-5891.

Woodland Hills, 3471 North Druid Hills just 6 miles from Emory offers pool, tennis court, exercise room, w/d hook-ups, central laundry facility, alarms, noise deterrent, A/C.  Ask about services.  Sm. pets, non-gated, plenty of trees, minimal yard space.  404-634-9462.
