Graduate of an accredited PA program with a BS including 6-12 months of clinical experience, MS preferred; strong interpersonal skills; currently possesses or is able to obtain State of Florida license; certification from the NCCPA; current BLS & ACLS; experience in endoscopic conduit harvest, cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, off-pump cases and critical care are desirable. Duties will include assisting in the OR; pre-and post-op care; inpatient and outpatient care; and weekday/weekend other call coverage responsibilities.

Founded in 1970, Cardiovascular Surgeons, P.A. (CVS) pioneered open-heart surgery in Central Florida. The founding partner performed the first coronary artery bypass in Central Florida in 1970. Over the past 40 years CVS started five heart programs in Central Florida and maintain a database of over 65,000 cases, one of the largest cardiac surgery databases in the United States. Today we have seven (7) surgeons providing cardiac, thoracic, cardiac/lung transplant, and vascular surgical services at three hospitals. We employ a team approach, consisting of one surgeon, one physician assistant, and one scrub technician. Each physician assistant and scrub technician is assigned to a single surgeon. The team approach provides consistent patient care, improved patient outcomes, efficiencies in the operation room, and a consistent work schedule for team members. In 2010, CVS surgeons performed over 1,500 cardiac surgeries and more than 1,200 other surgeries.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to Director of Clinical Operations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Assesses patient health status including state of wellness, compliance with care plan and determines appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. 2. Provides acute and chronic patient care including taking histories, doing physicals, monitoring therapies, giving injections and medications, suturing wounds. 3. Triages patient calls and evaluates patient problems. 4. Responds to emergencies including use of CPR. 5. Documents patient information and care provided in patient record and maintains department statistics. Uses computer to access/enter needed data. 6. Educates patients and families as appropriate. Provides continuity of care. 7. Consults with other staff as necessary. 8. Maintains patient confidentiality. The job holder must demonstrate current competencies applicable to job position. EDUCATION: BA/BS, MS preferred. Graduate of AMA accredited physician assistant program. EXPERIENCE: Minimum of one year experience as physician assistant, preferably in clinic setting. REQUIREMENTS: Current state PA license, certified by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. Current CPR certification. KNOWLEDGE: 1. Knowledge of acute and chronic care protocols, administration of medications, delivering physical care following treatment plan. 2. Knowledge of how to assess patient health and measure/record physiologic and growth indices. 3. Knowledge of health promotion principles and techniques and patient learning measurements. SKILLS: 1. Skill in gathering and analyzing physiological, socioeconomic and emotional patient data. 2. Skill in accurately evaluating patient problems in person or via phone and providing appropriate advice, intervention or referral. 3. Skill in evaluating and revising care plan based on patient changes. ABILITIES: 1. Ability to make responsible decision within the scope of a dependent medical practitioner. 2. Ability to develop health education programs and materials. 3. Ability to work collaboratively with all members of health care team.
