Atlanta is a modern, southern city. You will find aspects of the "old south" and the "new south" in Atlanta. Beautiful old homes and tree lined streets are found in many sections of the city. Pockets of poverty and hard lives are also here. The Emory PA program sometimes presents these contrasts to students. Atlanta offers a wide range of educational, cultural, and entertainment options. Emory University maintains Around Atlanta, a web page that features information about area attractions and recreational opportunities in Atlanta and the surrounding area. AccessAtlanta, a website associated with the Atlanta Journal Constitution, offers information about local events, arts and entertainment, and restaurants, as well as the latest local headlines. MARTA, the website for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, provides information on getting around Atlanta via public transportation. Atlanta made Kiplinger’s “Seven Cool Cities” list of fun and affordable top towns for students and young professionals.
The Emory campus is located on the edge of an older upscale residential neighborhood, Druid Hills (where "Driving Miss Daisy" was filmed). Only six miles away you will find Grady Memorial Hospital, located in inner city Atlanta, and providing excellent care to the medically underserved of metro Atlanta. A few miles from the Emory campus, you will find the "Buford corridor", a multiethnic home to many of the new immigrants to Atlanta and the US. Emory PA students live in both worlds, attending classes on the Emory campus, but reaching out through volunteerism and clinical rotations to many underserved communities. Moving to a large city such as Atlanta can be intimidating, although experience has shown us that many students are surprised by how much they end up liking Atlanta (with a good number staying each year in the metro area). We have prepared several resources for students approaching the move to Atlanta. We've also provided some thoughts on what life is like in PA school at Emory. Please visit a page of "practical information for visitors" to Emory for driving information, motels and restaurants near the campus. In addition, if you are planning to visit Emory or the PA Program, here are several convenient links: Campus Map, showing the 1462 Clifton building (home of the PA Program) Campus Map, showing the Michael Street Deck (nearest visitor parking to 1462 Clifton) Take a Virtual Emory tour. For campus directions to the PA Program, direct your internet browser to this printable map in Adobe Acrobat format. You will also need the key to the map. Our building number on the map is 1370. If you need driving directions, they are available here.
