As the Career MMSc Program is distance-based, students must assure that they have a current PC or notebook computer, capable of meeting their course needs. The computer should have sufficient memory and processor speed to be able to handle multitasking (for example, having a web-browser open at the same time as the email program and a database program). As noted elsewhere, a high speed internet connection, while not required, is highly recommended. This may require a network card for the computer, or other connecting equipment. Student will be required to submit assignments created in Microsoft Office suite software products – Word, PowerPoint, Access, Excel. Instructors are working in Microsoft 2000/2002 versions, and will post databases and other files created in those current versions. Students will need to have access to appropriate software to view these files. Recommended minimum requirements for a computer are:
Windows 2000 or XP Operating System (XP recommended) Current anti-virus software (Norton Antivirus recommended), with provision to keep up-dated. Free plug-ins: Adobe Acrobat reader, Windows Media Player, Real One Player (all most current versions) WinZip software (shareware) Microsoft Office Professional XP (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) Web Browser - Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6.0 or higher An account with an Internet Service Provider (high speed cable or DSL preferred). Learnlink client email software (obtain from Emory software distribution after registration as student). For students interested in purchasing new equipment, a package has been identified. Please contact us if you are interested in purchasing a new notebook computer, PDA, or printer, for your use in the Program. As PDA (Personal Digital Assistants) have a growing role in medical education and in medical practice, it is also strongly recommended that students have a PDA utilizing the Palm operating system. It is recommended that the minimum PDA have 16MB of memory (expandable memory preferred) and rechargeable batteries.
